Be independent from volatile and unfavorable electricity purchase prices
BESS / Battery
Useful tips and advice
The selection of the type, volume and power of the battery is made after a thorough analysis of each individual PV plant. The parameters that are taken into account are quite a few – for example, PV plant power, location, capacity of the connection to the energy system, expected yield, expected price of electricity, expected delta (difference) of the average daily price on the exchange, etc.
Before choosing batteries, it is important to know their main criteria and parameters:
- Volume (capacity) of the battery. It represents the amount of energy that the PV plant can hold. It is measured in kWh/MWh.
- Battery power. This is the power that can be given or received from the grid. It is measured in kW / MW
QUESTION: What is the difference between capacity and power? Here is a not very precise, but easily understandable answer: Imagine that you have a tank of, for example, 1000 liters and a pipe with a hole of Ф50, through which 500 liters can pass per hour. Then this tank can be filled or emptied in exactly 2 hours. The situation is similar with batteries, as the capacity is analogous to the volume, and the cross-section of the pipe is analogous to the power. Thus, a battery with a capacity of 1MWh will be charged from 0% to 100% in about 2 hours, if we supply 500kW of power to it
- Number of battery cycles. This is the life span of the battery. As you know, over the course of operation, batteries lose capacity. This loss is due to electrochemical processes in the electrolyte, anode and cathode and almost does not depend on time, but on many other parameters. Therefore, when people ask „What is the life of a battery?“ the answer is usually not time. But for now, let’s assume that with each charge and discharge, the battery loses a very small part of its capacity.
There are also many other parameters such as operating temperature, tolerance, load curves, charge/discharge current, internal resistance, degree of fire hazard, etc. All of them must be taken into account, but for this purpose an expert solution is needed, which NetSolar has. The selection of BESS also depends on the power and type of PV plant, for example:
- PV plant with a southern location of the panels – with this type, maximum power is achieved, but for a short period of time – at noon. Accordingly, the BESS must be calculated according to this power. The time of energy delivery also has an impact, which is usually in the evening and morning, when the price of electricity is highest.
- PV plant with an east-west location – with this type of PV plant, maximum power is never achieved. On the other hand, they have another important property – they start generating energy earlier – when electricity is more expensive and also work until later, when energy is also more expensive. Thus, in the end, they generate more money for their investors, despite the less energy generated. These solar power plants also need a lower capacity BESS.
- Solar power plants with atypical panel layout – in these cases, the overall behavior of the solar power plant is studied in a desired period by preparing a detailed model of the load curve over the annual period. Then, the appropriate BESS is selected for the case. To do this, fill out the contact form and we will contact you and consult you completely free of charge
